Newtowne 11 v 0 Roe Rovers

As a top of the table clash and a local derby and both sides full of confidence on paper this was to be a tight game but from the first minute Newtowne totally dominated this game. Newtowne quickly settled down and started to dictate play all over the pitch. With Roe Rovers under pressure it didn't take long for the 1 st goal. After a corner by Harkin the ball fell kindly to Mickey O'Brien and through a crowded area he slotted home from 15 yards into the top right hand corner.
The game played in a strong wind keep on much the same for the next 20 mins with Newtowne playing all the football and pushing for the next goal. When Rovers did get the ball they came up against a solid back four in O'Reilly, Mullan, O'Brien and Morrison, 25 mins after going one up. Newtowne got their 2 nd O'Reilly played a long ball down the line to Ferris who, under a heavy challenge, put a great cross into Gerardy Logue who tucked it away 2-0 it stayed until half time.
At half time Newtowne were made well aware that all the talk the last time these 2 teams met was that Rovers won 2 nd half 1-0 even though 1 st half was 3-0 to Newtown (beats me). With a strong wind and all the football, Newtowne continued where they left off totally out playing Rovers with a few changes it wasn't long before it was 3, Andy Ferris getting on the score sheet then it was the excellent McSparron's turn from the penalty spot to make it 4. The goals came thick and fast with Me Sparron and Ferris both getting their hatricks. This was McSparrons 3 rd hatrick in a row, this proves what quality signing Trevor was.
Then It was the turn of Morrison who worked tirelessly up and down the line all day and all season. All over Newtowne never gave up which was great to see, there was still plenty of fight in us with everyone working hard for each other proving what a great team spirit there is among us all.. Very fitting that Woodsy an ex Rovers player got the Magical 10 th delighted I'm sure, then to round things off Ryan Logue another ex Rovers player got goal number 11. Another good team performance from Newtowne who must now keep pushing harder than ever. Marty and myself will make sure of that (it was hard not to be biased in the report but it was totally a one sided game) |
