Newtowne looking resplendid in their new strip!!
I hate writing match reports, two years ago I thought if I stop some other bugger will feel bad and do it…..no such luck. Newtowne started brightly and totally dominated the first half. Grgory O'Brien saved well from McSparron and ex Newt Paul Logue early on. Paul Moore broke the deadlock with a sweet strike in the 8 th minute. Soon it was two nil when Mickey Logue handled the ball. Stephen Johnston banged home the penalty.
Rovers struggled to keep possession and were under the cosh. Moore made it 3-0 with a cracking drive. Moore it is a fine player but why does he wear those white socks. We spent £3 on each pair of socks getting the word NEWTS embroidered on them and he covers them..come on.
Newtowne played in spells in the first half and looked capable of scoring on numerous occasions. Rovers struggled and found it hard to retain possession.
At the break it looked ominous for Fox and his cubs. Newtowne were on top and the Newtowne bench looked impressive, Harkin, Ferris and O'Hara all eagerly looking a game.
The second half was like watching Big Brother at 3.15am. You keep thinking something good is going to happen but nothing ever does. The first 30 mins was dreadful. Rovers improved to their credit, Newtowne got over complicated, sloppy and careless.
Gregory O'Brien made two excellent saves in the last fifteen minutes, one from Moore and one from Johnston . With 7 minutes remaining Gary Moore was upended in the box and Newtowne got a second penalty. Johnston 's penalty narrowly missed Littler in the Roe Rovers Res net on pitch 3.
In the 51 st minute of the second half Nicholl scored with a chip to leave the final score 3-1. I actually missed the goal because I was watching Rovers Res v Dungiven Res, some of the players here were at the opening party for Stonehenge .
The final whistle was easily the highlight of the second half. It was a Jekyll and Hyde performance from both sides. Both can take positives and negatives in equal measure.
