Newtowne F.C. folded in the early 1980's but were re-formed in 1996 by John Holland and Cecil Holmes. In a previous incarnation Newtowne F.C. were very successful in the Coleraine and District League. A generous donation from Sean Murray, Thatch Bar, allowed the team to enter the league and buy a kit.
In their first competitive match in September 1996 Newtowne got off to a great start beating B.B.O.B Reserves by 5 goals to nil. With a strong squad Newtowne breezed to the league title in their first season. In the same season the club were unfortunate to lose in the quarter final of the North West Cup to B.B.O.B. Cecil and John managed the team that season while former Glentoran and Northern Ireland player, Gerry Mullan, took the training.
The second season was to prove a successful as the first, Newtowne ran away with the second Division title. In the North West Junior Cup Newtowne narrowly lost to neighbours Magilligan in the semi final at Limavady Showgrounds.
Newtowne's third season proved eventful. Cecil couldn't help with the team because of work and Gerry passed on the responsibility of training to Leo McCloskey. A reserve team was entered into North West Division 3 under the management of Mark Quigley and Peter Moore. The reserves won the league that year and emerged victorious in the supplementary cup final at Drumahoe. The first team struggled at the start of the year in Division 1 but a late run saw them narrowly miss promotion.
The 1999 / 2000 season proved the most successful to date. On a glorious Friday in May Newtowne beat hot favourites Newbuildings to win the City Cup final. Goals from Jarlath O'Brien and Paul Owens cancelled out Newbuildings' early lead. Captain Kevin Boyd was presented with the Division 1 cup on the same evening. Winning the double was a great way of welcoming the new millennium
