| Evolution of Newtowne FC
Newtowne days Mickey McCool took up the call and provided some excellent pictures
of the first Newtowne side.
Below is a short and patchy history of the team.
Hopefully this page will expand with help from former
players. Newtowne were first formed in 1969. The original committee comprised
of Jude Gallagher, Martin Rafferty, Mickey McKee, Vincent McLaughlin,
Joe Trimble and Mickey McCool. The club played in the Coleraine
and District Saturday Morning League. In a matter of years Newtowne won
that league.
It wasn't all success during this period. Newtowne reached six cup
finals and lost every single one of them. Under the management
of Mickey McCool, Newtowne became dominant locally winning the
Summer League and the prestigious Hoechst Cup. Pictured below is the side
that won the 1975 Hoechst Cup Final. Two late goals from Gerry Mullan helped
beat Killowen 3-2 on the night. Newtowne captain Frank Trainer received
the cup from Miss Hoechst, Helen Logue. Newtowne received £150 in prize money.
