Newtowne 4 -1 Drummond

It was back to business for Newtowne after the Christmas break a hard local derby would test the team but again the Newts recorded their 12th straight win in the league and now have a massive game next Saturday in the Irish Junior Cup at home to Portaferry. It was an average display from Newtowne but a lesson learned was there was too much turkey and ham, harp, vodka etc consumed over the festive season. Newtowne were missing Blain Morrison, Ryan Logue and new signing Stuart Bratton so competition for places is now hotting up.
The first half Newtowne played some very good football. Quick and fast football was the only way to deal with a big strong Drummond team. Newtowne took control early on and kept it for most of the first half looking very comfortable on the ball. Hard work off the ball was creating numerous chances for midfielders and forwards. Few chances went a begging before Newtowne finally broke the deadlock. Elder in nets for Drummond had made saves from Gazza, Ferris, Mc Sparron and Mullan before a ball drilled into the box seemed to bounce off Ferris and into the net a huge piece of luck but was deserved. It wasn't long before goal number 2 came a neat one two put Mc Sparron through and a brilliant finish into the top corner made it 2- 0. Then it was Gazza's turn to take his chance after being put through coolly slotting the ball home. Newtowne were comfortable throughout they deserved the lead at half time.
The second half in all honesty was a total non event. Newtowne never really started and a few boys were just content to let the game pass them by which was very disappointing. Drummond did come back into it although they never really looked as if they were going to affect the score line. The only highlight for Newtowne was after some good play from the defence O'Reilly received the ball and with a 60yard cross field pass found McSparron who with a fantastic finish made it 4-0. The game fizzled out then for Newtowne more chances were missed and near the end Drummond got a consolation goal back.
All in all a win is a win and scoring 4 goals was a positive but a massive improvement is needed from the boys for us to maintain the standard we have set. We need to push hard for the whole game and not get complacent
