Newtowne 4-2 BBOB

I hate writing match reports. I had a bad feeling in my water about this game all week. BBOB are getting their big guns back and they are an awesome prospect going forward. My fears were realised early on as BB went two up but eventually Newtowne's fitness and character helped them through.

This is Newtowne's best ever Premier start, seven straight wins. BB looked good from the start. Johnny Duddy and Gareth Falconer were causing Newtowne trouble with their pace. Alan Duddy looked the part too. BBOB took the lead through Falconer, he showed good pace and finished well when presented with an opportunity.

Stuart Moore was at the hub of all BB's good work, his throw's constantly caused trouble for Callaghan in nets. Moore was instrumental in the second. He was fouled and from the resulting free kick Falconer glanced home Duddy's free kick.

BB had the game by the scruff of the neck at this point but didn't capitalise. Newtowne improved too and began to create problems. The turning point came when Newtowne scored. Drew Ferris scored after a goalmouth melee. Had BB held on to half time perhaps they may have taken at least a point. When you're struggling for points any drawback is magnified and confidence is damaged.

As Moore went forward he left a height differential at the back. The remaining defenders could be stunt doubles for the teletubbies. While his forward forays were causing problems he was finding it harder to get back into position as the game went on. McSparron pounced on a stray ball to equalise before half time, it was a fine finish.

Second half was a pretty tense affair although a lot of it was played in the middle of the pitch. As the game progressed the home side seemed the more likely to get the winner. The home side thought they had a penalty when kelly handled. Actually he didn't handle it he caught it! The crucial Newtowne third came via McSparrron. After excellent approach play from Ferris, McSparron calmly rounded Pomeroy to score. The same combination made it 4-2. A great cross from Ferris was headed home by McSparron to complete his hat trick.

Newtowne survived on Saturday and had BBOB held on to half time the final result would have been different. The character shown by the home team was good, no panic and a good work rate. Callaghan had a fine game between the posts. Ferris and McSparron turned the game at the end with their pace and skill. McSparron was Newtowne's best performer on the day, a threat throughout.

BB started like an express train but they lost steam in the second half. First hal they put it up to Newtowne like no other team this year. In hindsight they didn't defend their 2-0 and went looking for a third thus leaving the defence exposed.
