Milk Cup in
Limavady
Newtowne committee
were actively involved in the running of the Milk Cup at Roemill.
Despite the weather the week went really well. The large attendances
were treated to some excellent games of football.
A word of thanks
to Marion and Darlene for running the shop for Newtowne. A
good profit was made during the week and this will go to club
funds.
The big story
of the week at Roemill was Jomo Cosmos. The South African
side entertained everyone with their football and their singing.
After beating
the County team to reach the Quarter Final of the Milk Cup
it emerged that Jomo had arrived here on a shoe string budget.
They had no water bottles, no medical kit and one half decent
football. To make matters worse star player Edward Hadebe
( Basher) bust his boots before the Quarter Final and the
club couldn't afford to buy him a new pair.
Within hours
people began to rally round to help. Newtowne provided water
bottles and bought Edward new boots. Brendan Gormley (Gormley
Sports Medicare) provided them with a new equipped medical
bag. Dessie Loughery, Bill Ely and Jack Rankin managed to
get them two good quality footballs after the County game.
Their couriers,
George and Mandy Chapman, were contacted by the Milk board
and each player received a water bottle and kitbag (most didn't
have one). On Wednesday evening Jomo were the special guests
of Mayor Jack Rankin at his Mayoral Milk Cup function. On
Thursday Jomo Cosmos were featured on the UTV round up of
Milk Cup action and they reserved a special word of thanks
to Newtowne F.C.
Jomo Cosmos
lost their quarter final on penalties to beaten Milk Cup finalists
Belvedere. Ironically Hadebe missed a penalty, easy saying
he was wearing Newtowne boots!!
The last two
games at Roemill saw Sheffield United beat Shamrock Rovers
6 - 0 in the final of the Dunluce Cup and the County team
won at last, defeating AIK Stockholm 3 - 2.
During the
week we welcomed a number of footballing legends to Roemill.
Gary Bailey, ex Man Utd keeper, was there with Tuks Academy.
Neville Southall and Kevin Radcliffe , both of Everton, where
there with the Welsh National side. Not forgetting legends
like Binny Hartin and Liam McCloskey.

by Mayor Jack Rankin, present Jumo Cosmos with footballs and
other items after they reached the Milk Cup Quarter Finals.

Jomo Cosmos star, Basher,
receives a new pair of boots from John Holland and Johnny
McGrotty. Basher had no boots to play in the Quarter Finals
against Belvedere. Brendan Gormley, Gormley Sports Medicare,
kindly donated a medical bag after hearing the club had no
First Aid equipment.
Jomo Club officials
also present in the photo. Watch out for Basher in the future!!!!
