Both times were even in the initial sparring
but as the half wore on Courts took the ascendancy. Godfrey
and Adams were looking lively up front and they were being
supplied with quality ball from McHale in defence and Dougherty
in the middle.
In the 20th minute of the game the best chance
of the game at that stage fell to BBOB, Rutherford ‘s
volley just went past the post. As Courts went forward BBOB
defender Brian Crumley was often on hand to break up the attack
and carry the ball forward.
Just
before the half hour mark BBOB were awarded a free kick outside
the box. Simpson saved well but spilled the ball, in the resulting
melee tempers flared and hands were raised. Referee Sean Keenan
sent off Nutt from BBOB and Adair from Lincoln Courts. The
dismissals calmed the situation quickly.
BBOB coped better with the 10 men and finished
the half stronger. Crumley set up King in the 32 minute after
a superb run. BBOB began to pass the ball down the channels
to the feet of Lynch and Rutherford. Both players like the
ball played to feet and they like to run at defenders. On
three occasions before the interval these two players drew
frees just outside the box. Only a well struck effort from
Les Bryson forced a save from Simpson.
The last ten minutes of the half petered
out and were uncharacteristic of a lively first period. Only
a shot from Lincoln Courts’ Patterson was worthy of
note during this time.
At half time both teams were well in the
game. Neither side had created a clear opening despite their
good approach play.
