Olympia 1 v 7 Newtowne |
 |
Newtowne returned to Irish Junior Cup action with a comfortable victory over Belfast side Olympia . After an early morning breakfast in The Gorteen the team headed by coach to Grove Playing Fields Belfast. The sun kissed pitches were an ideal setting for any game of football.
With Sam Norris sidelined due to a freak leg waxing accident John deighan deputised superbly between the posts.
Newtowne's bright start was rewarded by a goal. In the 7th minute Martin Harkin pounced on uncertainty from a Walsh throw in to score . Good possession followed from the visitors and they soon went 2 up. Deighan's long kick was headed home by an alert Harkin .
Olympia came back into the game at this point. Deighan did well to save one on one in the 21st minute. The home side did pull one back on the half hour. Newtowne's defenders stood still waiting on an offside and watched as Olympia's Damian Delaney made it 2-1.
Newtowne struck the woodwork twice before the break but the ball seemed to rebound to an Olympia player.
The home side started the second half better and deserved an equaliser. However Newtowne broke via Magee and Harkin. the latter's pass found Walsh and he finished well to increase the lead to 3-1.
The goal calmed the Newtowne nerves and soon it was 4-1. Morrison crossed from the left and Loughery of course swung and missed leaving Burns free. He calmed himself and slotted home to put the game beyond doubt .
Wonder sub Ryan Magee entered the frey. He made it 5-1 after Loughery did well in the box. Soon after it was 6. Loughery getting his reward. Morrison the provider and Loughery finished well after creating time and space for himself.
Then it was 7. Magee scoring again after yet another tantalising Blain Morrison cross. Magee was on a high two goals and two frys in the one day.
This goal was the last of an entertaining game. Fortunately for newtowne Harkin survived a nasty late tackle unscathed.
