Foylebank v Newtowne |
 |
A goal line clearance from Mark Dixon was the defining moment in this game. His header stopped Foylebank taking the lead and soon after Newtowne were in front.
Newtowne had two good chances in a bright opening, both fell to Loughery. However as the half wore on the better Foylebank became and they became the dominant force in the game.
Goal chances were few in a largely uninspiring first half. Norris saved well when called on by Conor Williams. He beat three Newtowne defenders in a mazy run and was well stopped by Norris.
Really that about sums the first half up. Foylebank bossed possession but they found it hard to get past the Newtowne back four who played really well. Most of the game was played in the middle of the pitch
The second half started badly for Newtowne as they continued to struggle. The goal line clearance by Dixon on the hour acted as a catalyst and began to spark Newtowne into life.
The midfield began to take control and they gave support to the forwards. Soon after Dixon 's clearance Loughery had a good chance but he failed to control. Burns created an opening after a good turn and shot.
The important goal came soon after. Loughery excellent header from Morrison's cross was parried against the post by the keeper. Burns took the ball from the rebound and fired home from close range, much to the relief of his team mates.

Tweedy models the new kit
Newtowne began to threaten at this stage. Harkin and Morrison began to hurt Foylebank down the flanks. Other chances were created at this stage but none were taken. Just when it seemed the game was going Newtowne's way the home side should have scored. From close range they shot wide.
The let off was doubly poignant soon after as Loughery made the score 2-0 after good work from Harkin.
In terms of possession Foylebank dominated this game. However they lacked the cutting edge to translate their possession into goals. Collectively Newtowne were disappointing although Norris and his back four did well. However Newtowne left with the three points and in the end their superior fitness told in the last 20 minutes.
Despite a below par show Newtowne can take positives. The managers kept things calm at half time and said the right things. During the last 15 minutes Newtowne looked stronger and showed a beleif that they would nab a winner.
Foylebank are many people's tips to go down but for me not on this show. They battled hard and played good football. Had they the ability to put the ball in the net on Saturday they would have won the game.
