Newtowne 2-0 Drummond |
 |
Newtowne and Drummond United went head to head in this combative local derby at the Scroggy Road pitches, Limavady. The second meeting in the league this season with Newtowne riding high at the top of the North West Premier intent on keeping their good run going and maintaining the upper hand against Drummond having won the first encounter. Both teams showed their intent right from the outset, Newtowne looking very sharp in midfield and attack. Their main threat being Morrison on the left wing with Mooney and Loughery up front. However the first chance of the game fell to Drummond when Clyde crossed the ball into Newtowne's penalty area from the left wing and on finding Roger Crown, he headed wide. This didn't deter the confident Newtowne however and they continued to attack on all fronts. The first goal came midway through the first half when Richard Crown brought Calvin Mooney down in the penalty box. Mooney having run onto a delightful pass from Mickey Walsh. Mooney calmly strode up taking the kick and slotting the ball low into Bob Crown's right hand corner. Drummond tried to take the game to the home side but were met by a resilient defence marshalled by the outstanding Mickey O'Brien. Newtowne posed the greater threat however and came close on several occasions through Loughery and Mooney but couldn't penetrate the Drummond defence, with Bob Crown making a number of comfortable saves.
The second half ran very much in the same vein as the first with Newtowne sharper and quicker in midfield and attack. Drummond hopes were dashed when influential midfielder Gibbens had to leave the field through injury. On the hour Newtowne went further ahead when the ball broke in their favour as Drummond were playing high up the pitch and chasing the game, Mooney passed the ball to Loughery on the half way line and he ran on goal calmly putting the ball past Crown. The game went end to end from this point on with both teams threatening on occasions. Drummond missed a couple of opportunities when a corner was fired right across the goal mouth with no-one there to tap home and during another goalmouth scramble the ball fell to Ferris who shot tamely into the arms of the keeper. As the game was coming to a close Newtowne kept pushing forward but were unable to add to their tally running out comfortable winners.
A battling performance from both sides, but a more youthful pacy Newtowne were just too good on the day for their neighbours Drummond.
